Summer 2008
Amelia received two Gerbils for her birthday.

Update on Sam the cat: Our declawed feline earned his keep catching mice that were sneaking in through our dryer vent opening (has now been sealed). We decided to try him in the bunny barn. We have witnessed him gobbling up mice several times now and he doesn't mess with the rabbits at all. Couldn't ask for a better barn cat, well it would be nice if he kept the chickens out... The goats finally stopped thinking he was going to eat them and have even head butted him off the front steps. He gets along with the dogs too and when not being chased can be seen laying in the sun next to the dogs or rubbing around their legs. December 2007: Indoor Animals
After our dog's (River's) first dog fight she recovered indoors. While sweeping the floors I realized how much I liked not having animals in the house anymore. The children make more of a mess then I can clean up already. At this point I declared that other then our fish and hermit crabs there would be no more indoor pets. Then this Christmas happened.
HERMIT CRABS
Laura's hermit crabs died during their molt so I decided to get her replacement crabs. FISH
Our fish that survived two hurricanes with power outages of two weeks and then days (a neighbor let me hook up my pump to his generator a little while each day to keep them alive) mysteriously fell ill last spring and died. When a friend offered her goldfish in December I gladly accepted.

AQUASAURS

|
Paul received an Aquasaurs habitat last February for his birthday. We just now (12/2007) let the eggs hatch. They are still to small for my camera to capture, but you can see the decorating Paul did. They even had their own nativity. The tank is weak so we placed it in a glass aquarium for "baby protection". |
|
SNAKE
Lucas has been asking for a snake for sometime (I can thank his Aunt Susie for this fun idea ... read with lots of sarcasm) so for some odd reason I gave in. For a gift this Christmas the boys received a snow corn snake courtesy of Aunt Susie's enthusiasm with the idea.

PARAKEET
Amelia really likes birds, so after being offered my father's elderly Parakeet several times I took him up on his offer. She spent her gift money on toys and treats for him, but still has not thought of a name for him.
SEA MONKEYS
Since everyone else was getting animals Janie needed something too. Sea monkeys seemed to be manageable and so they too have entered our family. |
|
 |
For those keeping track of who has what Joanna is to young to care and Sarah assumes everything is hers anyway.
The sea monkeys are in the small green tank. A very tired Sarah covered with Candy-Cane liked to try and catch Sea Monkeys, so we put them in the crab's tank. Sarah is afraid of of the crabs "pinching", so for now everyone is safe. |
|
At this point you might be asking, "What about the no animals rule?". In my head (a very odd place) all these additions seemed tolerable since after all they were all confined to cages. Then came Sam.
CAT
Sam was adopted from a local pound. His online profile showed him licking baby kittens. In hopes that he wouldn't harass the rabbits I wanted to adopt him to help with the mouse problem in the workshop. |
|
|
We brought him home, applied flea treatment, three days later bathed him and loved on him. We decided to keep him indoors to get to know us for a couple of weeks. He is around five years old and already altered. He has been good with the children and lets Joanna grab and poke at him.
After days of growing attached to him, I was cuddling Sam and playing with his toes. Ugh! How could I not have noticed before?....DECLAWED. |
While a declawed cat may survive in an urban backyard he doesn't stand a chance in my woods. So Sam is an indoor cat for now. Lucas has allergies to some cats but doesn't seem to be reacting to Sam. If it becomes an issue we will have to chicken wire the full openings of our barn/workshop and let him try to be a clawless mouser.
P.S. For those who remember Wacky... She passed away from her cancer a year ago. She is still missed by Amelia who was in charge of her feedings. |
