We are happy to say, Zakita is an awsome goat dog! She loves the goats licking them when ever she can. She does not allow River near them, which is great since River wants to play rough with them. Unfortunately, she does not feel protective of chickens. River is often able to torment the stupid ones that leave the coop fence.

Zakita and Bob, the father of our goats.
River after being told by Zakita she needs to stop running near the goat kid pen.

May 2007

We now have chickens and goats and have discovered River can't be left alone with them because the urge to chase them is more then she can handle. Ironically, River has become a house dog after saving the goats and mom from a pack of wild dogs that came after us while the goats were grazing in our woods. She has a broken rib and bites on her belly. Apparently annual dog fights are becoming a trend... We need more fencing! This gives us the summer to train Zakita, without River's influence, not to chase the goats. We have given up on the chickens with Zakita. We just can't have free range chickens with her around.

April 2007

River and Zakita are doing well. Zakita is huge! We are all hoping they are not chicken eaters. The baby chickens are due to arrive soon and the rabbits and goats next month.

All the puppies born last year have found homes. The mama dog stopped coming around when she wanted to wean the puppies. Rumor has it the daddy dog was taken by the local shelter with good prospects of being adopted.

Sarah and Zakita
February 2006

Zakita was born December 1, 2005. Her mother is a Maremma, whom guards a herd of 120 goats. Her father is a German Shepherd who works for the Florida State Troopers.

River was a stray we found at Little River Springs Park. It took us a week of daily visits to catch her. She now never leaves and chases away other animals from our home. She likes the kids and never turns down a chance to go for a ride in the van.
River wondered away and met with a horrible tragedy. She was brutally injured. We owe a great debt of gratitude to Companion Animal Hospital in Live Oak for helping us nurse her back to health. They have been very caring toward River and patient with moms questions and concerns. Thank you everyone at Companion Animal Hospital!

Five days old

Our neighbor's dog (really a dog that wonders the neighborhood) had ten puppies! She has them living under our home. The kids think they are great. We are trying to find them all homes! Any takers? UPDATE: All puppies were adopted.

Save me from these gnats!

How can you resist?
Zakita is six months and already over 50lbs. She spends her days chewing on the father of the above puppies. He is not very bright and doesn't resist. Zakita is a very good dog. She protects the puppies and we are hoping this means she will make a good goat dog. June 2006
