Hippity Hop! Welcome to our rabbit page.

Summer 2008

Newcali and Peter are spoiled rabbits. They have spent most of the summer indoors. At first it was just Newcali and her newest litter born July 6. We decided to keep a girl kit from the litter and wanted her to be handled as much as possible.

Peter and Sister Sue were brought in during the hot afternoons. Then we lost Sister Sue to illness. I should have noticed she wasn't well sooner. :( Peter bunny was brought in until I can sterilize all the cages. I broke the pressure washer so the project is going to be time consuming. We are enjoying playing in the airconditioned house with our rabbits for now. All of NewCali's kits (except the girl we are keeping) are back in the bunny barn in one of our growing out cages. They should return indoors in the next couple of weeks to um...well...fill the freezer. All Sister Sue's kits are boys, except the runt and are also in the growing out pen.

February 2008

One week and two days

An early easter basket was collected on the first day of lent this year.

They grow very quickly. Twice a day we bring the rabbits in to be checked and cuddled.

This bunny is napping on Laura at one week three days. We only lost one kit so far and that was to human mom's stupidity. The hutch was not properly divided and one poor baby got his head caught where the wall and floor meet. He strangled himself. It was very sad.
One baby developed an eye infection but we managed to treat it before anyone else caught it. We have been blessed not to have any fleas or mites in the parents or kits. The bunnies are very cute and love to take naps in our arms. Sister Sue who is in a smaller cage seems to especially enjoy the break from her kits. They have learned to jump out of their nest box and climb all over her. Newcali is a much more attentive mom and when we take her babies she spends her time cleaning and replacing hay in their nest box. Her babies don't leave the nest box yet so she can get away whenever she wants.

January 2008

We finally have baby rabbits!!! Two litters of kits were born
January 28.

NewCali baby
Her only dark baby. All of her other babies are white.

These babies are so cute. It is going to be very difficult not to get attached to them and to remember most of them are destined for the dinner table.

August 2007

Sister Sue is due around September 10. (update: no live babies born.)Because of the heat I have three rabbits living in my bathroom now. The oversized master bathroom i once thought was a waste of space sure is coming in handy now!
Now named Newcali (left), our injured doe lives in the master bathroom with Sister Sue (above) and Peter until the weather cools. Sister Jess lives in the shop still and we regret to say we lost the flemish-new zealand cross.

July 2007

We were unable to attend the fair due to illness , then dad decided to start with chickens, then the goats arrived, then, well, we had no more money in our animal fund; and finally a very generous women named Cheryl on our local Freecycle group gave us five Rabbits!

Peter is a Flemish Giant, he came named. The does are mixes. We are going to start breeding when the weather cools.

placed in the workshop.
Peter is interested in the camera.
Peter is the friendliest of all the rabbits so you see more pictures of him. I don't like to stress the girls.
Our New Zealand-Californian doe injured her toe so she is recovering in the house. Her favorite spot is behind the clothes washer.

Left: One of two sisters, can't remember the breed mix. These rabbits are still very unhappy about the move so they were not in the mood for picture taking.

Flemish-New Zealand cross doe

Update: We lost this doe to heat stroke. Very sad day.

March 2007

We are attending the Suwannee County Fair at the end of the month (March 2007) to see the different rabbit breeds. We are sold on the New Zealand White Rabbit. Joanna's birth and the the arrival of baby chickens has postponed the rabbit search until after the Fair. There are only so many new projects we can start at a time.

God has blessed us with very generous friends. The Texiera Family has donated two rabbit hutches. Below is a not-so-flattering picture of our hutches in the process of being cleaned out. The taller hutch is for the buck and the lower hutch with the nesting area is for the doe. Yes, rabbits are referred to as bucks and does. As a city chick I never knew!
